Kanchipuram Silk Saree

Kanchipuram Silk Sarees are synonymous with South India. Beauty that combines traditional motifs and the purity of the material can only be found in the Kanchipuram saree. The shine and durability of this traditional weave is distinct, unique and unmistakable.

History of Kanchipuram Silk Saree

Variously called Conjeevaram and Kanjiwaram, traditional Kanchipuram sarees are worn for festive occasions, ceremonies and weddings. The saree, which is woven into the cultural fabric of South India evolved many centuries ago, during the Chola dynasty, when the famous weaving communities of Devangas and Saligars of Andhra Pradesh migrated to Kanchipuram and set up their flourishing trade there. Krishna Deva Raya, who ruled the Cholas between 985 - 1014 AD encouraged the growth of the entire silk industry during the 15th century. Although silk weaving was temporarily halted by the French invasion in the 17th century, it was rejuvenated in the 18th century again and this silk ranks amongst the most popular silks in the world.

The fabric has always been closely tied in to rituals and religious ceremonies and the silk bears motifs and designs of the scriptures found on the walls of Kanchipuram village. Pure Kanchipuram silk sarees have retained their shine and authenticity to this day, although the patterns and designs have evolved over the years. Woven Traditional Kanchipuram sarees are sold across the world by Vijayalakshmi Silks to satisfy the need for simplicity and beauty and keep alive this traditional Indian craft that has been carried out since centuries.

While Designer Kanchipuram silk sarees are loved and bought the world over, there are many imitations that have come into the market to cash upon people’s love for this traditional weave. Cheap and low-cost imitations are threatening to harm the purity of this saree, destroy these centuries old tradition as well as the livelihood of traditional weavers who still practice this trade.

It is possible to distinguish an original pure silk kanchipuram weave from an imitation one, and a few distinguishing features are below;

*  Traditional kanchipuram silk is obtained from sericulture of the mulberry worm.

*  Handwoven sarees have a double waft and weft, are defined by the fineness of the silk and a slight unevenness of the design

*  Sturdiness of the saree comes from 250-300 threads woven into the weft. The feel of the saree is soft yet strong.

*  The zari used in pure authentic kanchipuram saree is gold and silver, where silver is woven in first coated with gold later

*  Traditional handwoven kanchipuram sarees are still woven by weavers whose families have been doing this since decades. The designs are almost always inspired by scriptures and temple architecture.
